BBC MaestroAn e-learning platform for inspiring courses with a celebrity twist.
An online learning platform featuring some of the nation's best-loved and respected celebrities, sharing their skills and expertise in their respective disciplines.
Understanding the vision
In October 2019 we were approached by the BBC Maestro CTO and management team to build an online e-learning platform to their specifications.
Cookies came recommended by a tech team that had worked with BBC Maestro’s management previously and after a due diligence process, they were satisfied that we could service their requirements and, crucially, do so in a manner that would ensure the necessary protections of the BBC brand.
Following a comprehensive discovery session with the BBC Maestro team, led by the CTO, the outline requirements for the platform were mutually agreed and we got to work on the development.
Working with BBC Maestro’s CTO, CPO and their in-house UX/UI team, we created a technically robust, simple, stunning, bespoke e-learning platform where audiences can consume courses of interest delivered by celebrity practitioners.
“CookiesHQ have been a pleasure to work with as a partner to launch our service into the world. A great mix of strategy, creativity, and execution, has allowed us to focus solely on making our product as user-friendly and polished as it could be, without having to worry for a second that it wouldn’t work seamlessly.”- Stephen Bond, Chief Product Officer at BBC Maestro
We’ve built a platform that lets people buy courses and play videos online, from any device. Sounds simple enough, right?
But there’s a lot of technical complexity involved in developing a VOD platform as slick as BBC Maestro.
From transcoding videos and delivering them with adaptive bitrates according to users’ internet connections to implementing seamless pause and resume features, the BBC Maestro VOD platform is an example of state-of-the-art engineering.
Made to scale
We knew that BBC Maestro would be a massive hit from day one; with huge household names behind it, it’s been featured on BBC Radio 2 and Good Morning Britain. So, our team planned for scaling from the get-go.
It’s been independently tested to support more than 24 million requests over 24 hours, so it’s safe to say the platform can stand up to promo from even the biggest of the celebrity maestri.
Keeping data flowing
We developed a bespoke accounting integration and implemented a Customer Data Platform for generating reports, events and analytics tracking. The platform provides the BBC Maestro team with the granular data they need to keep delighting their customers and take the app to the next level.
Launched in October 2020, the platform is expanding to offer more courses from maestri like Helena Bonham-Carter, Malorie Blackman, Heston Blumenthal, Julia Donaldson and Peter Jones and we’re already hard at work developing exciting new features for admins and audiences.
